Final Assignment- Sketches

Final Assignment- 800 words Essay

We have to write minimum 800 words for the final essay base on our topic - Creative Thinking.

Creative Studies-Assignment 2 Thematic Project-Creative Multimedia

Title: Creative Thinking

The first thing that comes to our mind when we talk about the “creative multimedia” is the FCMers because we are the one who always interact with the creative multimedia, either using them to present our work or looking for inspiration. The term of “creative” can be defined as a new idea, new concept or the new associations of existing idea or concept while the term “multimedia” is a medium that have the combination of multiple content forms, usually includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, and interactivity content forms. Basically the “creative multimedia” is just a tool that we used to present our idea and concept, or a stage that allow us to spread out the idea. The creative multimedia is driven by the creative thinking, the processes by which the imaginary sense perceptions arise and manipulated. The creative thinking is what the FCMers have to master and adapt in order to create something really different from the existing one.

The creative thinking is about the uniqueness and specialty. How can you tell whether a person have the creative thinking or not? First of all, “Judge a book by its cover”, we can tell by judging their appearance because the ways you wear always reflect the behavior and characteristic of who you are. The people who think creatively usually dare to be different and enjoy on doing so. They like to try on different kinds of wearing styles, mix and match their clothes until they looks so fashion and stylish and changing their hairstyles or color every month. Besides that, these people are always the trend starter, they do not look fashion in stereotype, for example boy cannot wear pink color shirt. In the other hand, for those who do not think creatively, the term of fashion in their mind is just troublesome and unnecessary. Instead of spending time on attire or dolling up themselves, they prefer comfortable. They wear whatever without thinking so much as long as it’s comfortable. In the end, they look dull and not outstanding at all.

We can also differentiate the creative thinking person from their living lifestyle. The traditional life style, work during the day and rest during the night does not work on those creative thinking person. Instead of living such a boring life they rather go for a crazy one. The nightlife is a basic condition. For instance, the FCM students prefer to work at late night because the ideation comes easily during the night hence they can work more efficiently during the night. Furthermore, there are some different between creative thinking person or not in the interest aspect. The creative thinking peoples usually prefer visual kind of stuff. They watch anime or movie instead of reading a long heavy novel. The creative thinking person also more tend to outdoor activities because they are more active compare to non creative thinking person. They like to explore the world, curious on everything, adventure, travel and experience everything by their own but definitely not staying home and reading an encyclopedia. The social life of people with creative thinking is much more interesting compare to others. They like to make friends everywhere, hanging out with friends, gather for some event. For example, the idea come out from a brainstorming of a group of people are surely better than the idea from a single person.

The advantages of having a creative thinking is easily come out with some new idea, work on that and you will get profit. The creative thinking is also a good way for problem solving. You don’t have to think until your head crack and come out with a complicated and unsuitable solution but the creative thinking can let you have a simple yet precisely solution. On the other hand, the creative thinking also can bring you some negative effects. The very first and serious problem is the Bipolar disorder. According to the Wikipedia, Bipolar disorder is a psychiatric diagnosis that describes a category of mood disorders such as mania, milder and hypomania. There is significant evidence to suggest that many people with creative talents have suffered from some form of bipolar disorder, for example the well known artist, Vincent Van Gogh. For your information, the people who involved in art have higher chance to face this disease. Besides that, the public mostly those who are stereotype minded think the people with creative thinking are abnormal. It’s due to the different way we solving problem or the different way we talk.

In the conclusion, we believe that the creative thinking is really important for all of us to develop. You need not to be involved in art. The creative thinking can be apply on everything and it’s better to get start since we are young because the children’s mind are not influence by the bunch of rules, laws and restriction which will limited the growth of creativity. Although there are some negative effect that you might face, but the chances are not high and you can avoid that easily with the correct way of express your emotion.

Final Assignment- Mind Map

Our Final Assignment for Malaysian Studies is thematic project - Creative Multimedia, the logical mind map that we have done show all the stereotype idea that related to the main topic, creative multimedia. For example, the majoring, the software and so on.

After that, we think about the idea for our specific topic, creative thinking. This time, we try to think differently and avoid all the stereotype's idea. We come out something like living lifestyle and negative affects.

Week 10 - Random Word/Iamge Association

An Article to share
It's Time To Think Like a FOOL!!!!
by Roger Von Oech -http://blog.creativethink.com/2010/03/its-time-to-think-like-a-fool.html-

It's that time of year again! And it's time for one of my very favorite creative thinking strategies:

Think Like A Fool

Carrying the strategy of "looking at things differently" to extremes brings us to the realm of the fool, the being for whom everyday ways of understanding have little meaning.

It's the fool's job to extol the trivial, trifle with the exalted, andparody the common perception of a situation. In doing so, the fool makes us conscious of the habits we take for granted and rarely question. A good fool needs to be part actor and part poet, partphilosopher and part psychologist.

And throughout history, the fool has been consulted by Egyptian pharaohs and Babylonian kings, Chinese emperors, Greeks tyrants, and Hopi Indian chiefs.

The fool will reverse our standard assumptions. He'll say, "If a man is sitting on a horse facing the rear, why do we assume that it is the man who is backwards, and not the horse?"

The fool notices things that other people overlook. He might ask, "Why do people who pour cream into their coffee do so after the coffee is already in the cup, rather than pouring the cream in first and saving themselves the trouble of stirring?"

The fool can also be irreverent. He'll pose riddles such as,

"What does a rich man put in his pocket that the poor man throws away?" When he answers, "Snot," he forces us to re-examine the sanctity of our everyday rituals.

The fool can be cryptic. He'll say the best way to see something is with your ears. Initially, this may seem weird, but after you've thought about it, you might agree that listening to a story conjures up more images than watching television.

The fool can be absurd. Having lost his donkey, a fool got down on his knees and began thanking God. A passerby saw him and asked, "Your donkey is missing; why are you thanking God?" The fool replied, "I'm thanking Him for seeing to it that I wasn't riding him at the time. Otherwise, I would be missing as well."

The fool will take the contrary position in most conversations. Whereas many people would agree that, "If a thing is worth doing, it's worth doing well," The fool might say,

"You don't have to do things well! Indeed, it's okay to do them poorly; otherwise you'll never let yourself be a beginner at a new activity."

The great benefit of the fool's antics and observations is that theystimulate our thinking. They jolt us in the same way that a splash of cold water awakens us when we are drowsy.

Question: Where has "thinking like a fool" helped you look at a problem in a helpful way?

Week 10 - Random Word/Iamge Association

This week, we talk about the Random Word and Image Association. Basically, the random word is the extension of juxtaposition, a more easier way that help you to get the idea. The random word works as a catalyst which motivate your idea, then you come out a new idea which the random word is not included.

The random word always work with a problem or situation, relate your problem to any random word that come to your mind or everywhere else, then try to think about the random word you chosen and elaborate it. Finally relate back to your problem. It's a good design if the problem is solved in a simplest and efficient way.

Week 9 Juxtaposition(Exercise)

This week, Mr. Radzi give us some exercise about juxtaposition, just to let us completely understand what juxtaposition is about. This was the first class that ended at 6pm, simply because the exercise given are interesting and interactive. I think most of us are quite enjoying. Anyway, i hope the rest of the classes can be like this, at least not boring notes, but some interactive exercise can actually help us on the understanding.

There are the exercise that we have done during the class.
First, we are given 2 groups of words, and then choose 3 numbers that you like, according to the groups of words and the numbers beside them, then, use those words that u chosen, form a sentence and sketch it out.

After that, combine the words you chosen to become a totally new word. For example, Flowerwood, Flywater and sketch it out. The last exercise was, HOW MERGERS GO WRONG?
we are requested to merge 2 kinds of animals together, hence, they must not survive.I used elephant and hen's feet, trying to make the elephant unbalance, of course, this is not the answer.

The answer is............................................................................

Week 8 Juxtaposition

This week continue about the juxtaposition.

Juxtaposition in action:

Analogy, a cognitive process of transferring information from the particular subject to another.
-making things familiar
-use thing which has not any apparent connection to the object in order to explain something
-use familiar to explain complex(non-familiar)
-Logical Analogy(Use similarities to connect back, submarine and whale for examples)
-Affective Analogy(Emotional resemblance, pig and lazy for examples)
-Metaphor(2 similarity)
-Simile(Allows 2 ideas to remain distinct in spite of their similarities, keywords (like,as)

Oxymoron, an expression with contradictory words, for examples wise fool, legal murder.

Can you think of any advertisement which use juxtaposition?

Week 7 Juxtaposition

The Legion
Angel/Devil(zombie) can be seen in this movie.

Zombieland
Hero/Rascal can be seen in this movie

Sherlock Holmes
Intelligent/Silly

Week 7 Juxtaposition

Juxtaposition can be defined as placing two variable, side by side and their contrast or similarity are shown through comparison. Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By juxtaposing two objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically associate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less familiar or vice-versa.

Juxtaposition also is the arrangement of two or more ideas, characters, actions, settings, phrases, or words side-by-side or in similar narrative moments for the purpose of comparison, contrast, rhetorical effect, suspense, or character development.

Juxtaposition may refer to synonymous with contrast, two objects or texts that oppose one another.

Random juxtaposition is two random objects moving in parallel, a technique intended to stimulate creativity.

The 'Lost' Season 1 was played in the lecture, the juxtaposition literary occur.

For examples:
Success/Failure - In his past, Jack's refusal to give up on Beth in the OR where unsuccessful, but when he refused to give up on Charlie he was successful with CPR. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")

Lucky/Unlucky - Hurley and Walt play backgammon, where Walt is lucky to get the rolls he wanted each time and Hurley is unlucky, getting rolls that caused him to lose. ("All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues")

Brokeness/Hope - Directly after the moment described above, a light comes on in the Hatch, reinvigorating Locke's hopes and faith in the Island (and his destiny).

Life/Death - Boone dies at the same time Claire gives birth to Aaron, showing a juxtaposition of life and death with a strong contrast between the two. ("Do No Harm")

Week 6 Stereotype and Mind Map

The Logical Mind Map is directly connected to stereotypes. The Logical mind map comprises of solely stereotype words. Which means that every word or image that is put within the mind map is directly related to the central subject through its links.

• It is a concise way of listing and categorizing a mass of information.
• The relationship between each word will help trigger memories and greatly reduce the amount of note taking and assist in the understanding of the subject.
• The more interesting the mind map the greater the interest that the on looker will have in the information.
• The usage of images along side with word will again create interest for the mind map as well as assist in triggering a memory of the subject.

Week 6 Stereotype and Mind Map

Image from http://www.mindmapart.com/evaluating-client-reality-mind-map-adam-sicinski/

Mr Radzi gave the lecture about stereotype, logical and creative mind-map.

The stereotype is the very first impression on something in your mind. Mr Radzi gave the explanation by playing game. He first wrote the answer on 2 paper and then ask the question to see whether they are same or not. The stereotype on anything in our mind can kill our creativity. We should avoid stereotype because they are not special and unit, they have been used for thousands time. BUT, we must know the stereotype well so that we can avoid.

Mr Radzi have show us many examples of creative and logical mind map. In order to come out a very creative mind map, you have to use some elements. For examples, the color, graphic images, arrow, font size, etc.

The logical mind map is basically for gathering the information about the subject you want to study. Any information that collected are usually very basic and tend to stereotype.

The Evaluating Reality Mind Map (above mind map) helps guide Life Coaches in evaluating their client’s current reality and circumstances. The Mind Map first presents a series of questions that the Life Coach asks their client in order to help them get a better understanding of their current behavior. Once the client’s behavioral patterns have been identified, the Life Coach delves into the client’s Learning Style – helping them to set effective tasks that will naturally motivate the client to achieve their goals and objectives. Furthermore, the Mind Map looks at how a Life Coach can optimize learning for their client during tasks, and concludes with a look at a client’s Success Strategy – what a client does on a daily basis that helps them naturally achieve their goals and objectives.

Week 6 Stereotype and Mind Map

The weekly task is choose 3 keywords from the mortar&pestle mind map which Mr Radzi provided, and think about another 3 keywords which can let you link the mortar and pestle together.

The keywords that i have choose are money, smoke and fashion.

For the first keywords-money--i think of beggar
the beggar can use the pestle to protect himself when attacking by people and then use the mortar to beg for money.

The second keywords-smoke--smoking
imagine a cigarete which will not finish! The pestle will be the magic cigarete in huge size and can't finish, on the other hand, the mortar will be the ash tray.

The last keywords-fashion--trendy
You can be very fashion even though you having flu! The mortar mask will give you a pretty cool style and the pestle tie which make you perfect!

Week 5- Mind Map/Stereotype

Mr. Mustaffa Muzer brief us about the stereotype and also the mind map concept. The mind map concept can be divided into 2 parts, logical mind map and associated mind map, we learned logical mind map this week and the associated mind map will be cover by Mr. Radzi Bedu on the following week.

Basically, the logical mind map is directly connect to stereotype, the content of the mind map is directly related to the subject title.

Rules of Logical Mind Map
-Put your subject at the center
-Make the subject stand out from others
-Use arrows, colors, font size to differentiate
-Use drawing, images, or sketches to make it more interesting
-Make it neat and clear for easier presentation of meaning
-Use branching, root to make it more organize

Week 4 Novelty, Creativity, Innovation, Invention

Mr Mustaffa briefed us about the ‘Novelty, Creativity, Innovation and Invention’. Mr Mustaffa asked one question in the class, is your invention ‘creative’ if that is only create for your own good, your hobby or what you like? No.

It’s is simply because we have to inspire by big issues, normally is related to human. We come out the solution or creation, invention which can exactly solve the issues and affect through out the global. Just like the first video that Mr Mustaffa shown us, the hero, Jane Chen who created a warm embrace that saves lives. She was inspired by the baby who was dead because of not enough time send to the hospital which are far far away from their hometown. Because of her invention, many babies was saved.

Week 4 Novelty, Creativity, Innovation, Invention

Defining novelty
Novelty is something which are the very first, original, special while the creativity means the process of creating something new. Innovation is the changing of idea based on the old, exist product, idea, or design, you can say that the innovation is the improvement of invention because the invention is actually creating the new idea.

Novelty can also be define as the quality of being new. It can be divided into 2, subjective and objective novelty, the objective novelty referring to the very and only new idea in the world which did not mention or discover by others yet. On the other hand, the subjective novelty is something as being new by an individual person or a group of person. This idea maybe already being used by others outside the group.

The term innovation is a process turning an idea or improve/upgrade an idea into the practical reality or service which can be accept by the public and they are willing to pay money for that.

Week 3 Creativity - Personal Reflection

What is the creativity?
Creativity is a mental process involving the discovery of new ideas or concepts, or new associations of the existing ideas or concepts, fueled by the process of either conscious or unconscious insight.

Description
Creativity is the ability to see something in a new way, to see and solve problems no one else may know exists, and to engage in mental and physical experiences that are new, unique, or different. Creativity is a critical aspect of a person's life, starting from inside the womb onward through adulthood.

From Human Motivation, 3rd ed., by Robert E. Franken:
Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or
possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

The video above is the professor Ken Robbison’s speech on ‘Do school kill creativity?’ Well, let’s take the example of little girl discovered her talent on dancing. I think not eveyone can discover their own ability or talent in that age, even their parents.

If the school have the right attitude on helping childrens find their own abilty then the problem solved. The school should provide every possible choices according to different child but not keep telling the children you must study in order to survive!

*p/s
Mr Yap's lecture was fun and interesting, i like the way he gave lecture.

Week 3 - Weekly Task

Defining creative personality:
- Creative individuals have a great deal of energy, but they are also often quiet & at rest.
- Creative individuals tend to be smart, yet also naive at the same time.
- Creative individuals have a combination of playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
- Creative individuals alternate between imagination and fantasy ant one end, and rooted sense of reality at the other.
- Creative people seem to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion.
- Creative individuals are also remarkable humble and proud at the same time.
- Creative individuals to a certain extent escape rigid gender role stereotyping and have a tendency toward androgyny.

- Most creative persons are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
- The openness and sensitivity of creative individuals often exposes them to suffering pain yet also a great deal of enjoyment.

Introduction of Creative Studies

After the lecture, the first task was stated out our expectations and also what we would like to be learn from this class as the Introduction of Creative Studies.

I hope to be a "creative" guy from the class. Hoping can gain the knowledge from all the lecturers' personal experiences.

From the word "creative", i hope that the class would be interesting and fun; not boring and dull ( just read from the slides which is full of thousands of words).
